Never underestimate the power of teenage girls. This weekend, the sleeper hit Dear John managed to sneak in and steal the box office crown from Avatar (which just passed Titanic as the all-time box office champion). Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, the films weekend figures were far north of what the suits were predicting, pulling in an impressive $32.

"Tom Green is back to take over the world" By Yan Digilov, Thresher Staff Since 1996, the name Tom Green has been synonymous with the audacious, the unorthodox and - at times - the downright scary. Green first burst onto the national scene with MTVs The Tom Green Show, which ran from 1999-2000, but the comedian has since become relatively quiet on the national level.

When in Rome flip-flops between rom-com and awkwardness

Paris may be the city of love, but Rome is the city of romance, the perfect place to find that special someone. And while When in Rome, which ventures into sometimes trite and overly hokey territory, is not a great movie, it is still a fun, playful chick flick about searching for love within the citys beautiful piazzas.

For the sake of time and space, lets keep the discussion of Tuesdays Academy Award nominations strictly to the dissection of the Best Picture nominees. As previously mentioned, the Academy made the decision to expand the traditional field of five nominees to 10 this year to try and include both art-house pictures and tentpole blockbusters.

"Avatar" and "The Hurt Locker" led the way at the announcement of the 82nd Annual Academy Award nominations with nine nods each, creating an interesting race for Best Picture. There were no shockers, but a few films did sneak into various categories that seemed to be leaning in another direction, with the inclusion of "The Blind Side" for Best Picture and "In the Loop" for Best Adapted Screenplay being prime examples.

The first and final shots in "Edge of Darkness" belong in a different movie. They are beautiful, poetic, and dark explorations of ambitious filmmaking. Unfortunately, the sense of wonder these images imply is corroded by the rest of the film. "Edge of Darkness" wastes little time to establish its characters, mostly because that would detract from the mindless action of the story, before Emma Craven (Bojana Novakovic) is gunned down in front of her fathers house.

Ironically, the decision by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to expand the traditional field of Best Picture nominees from five to ten competitors this year has had no impact whatsoever on what the Academy hoped to accomplish with the move: to include big-budget, populist-friendly films on Oscar night in hopes of attracting larger audiences, rather than some of the more idiosyncratic choices the Academy has made in recent years.
