The Living Wage

Currently, there is a movement on campus-under supervision of the student-created group Students for a Living Wage-to increase the wages of all ISU employees. Also recently, their proposal to increase these wages to $19.51 was decried by Diann McKee, the vice president of finance here at ISU, saying this increase would cost $12 million for full-time employees, which would either cause budget cuts or require the university to increase revenue in some fashion.

Easterns 2008 security report, released in October, shows drug- and alcohol-related offenses on campus are on the rise. While this may come as a surprising increase to some, there are reasons the campus community should be happy with the reports findings, namely in the area of campus safety.

Thanksgiving break is less than five days away and I couldnt be more excited. Not because its the first time Ill be home since school started, or because I can catch up on sleep or even because of the pecan pie, but because of the traditions. This Friday when everyone is packing up their cars to go home, Ill be taking the train down to Carbondale and driving another hour to the southernmost tip of Illinois to take part in a Steele family tradition: Deer season.

The Hidden Danger of Hookah

Contrary to popular belief, hookah bars are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. In fact, hookah smoking poses just as much risk (if not more) to the health of the smoker as well as those in the same vicinity. Many advocates of hookah smoking will tell you that there is no tar in hookah smoke they will also tell you that there is less nicotine.
