Maingate's main problem

The first Thursday of every month, many students look forward to a night off campus at Maingate. Students are bussed to Maingate, where they wait in a line to pay the nights entry fee, check their belongings, and head to the dance floor. While the club is known for its popular music and strobe lights, it is increasingly becoming synonymous with many difficulties that are making the trip a lot less worthwhile.

Who is Henrietta Lacks? If you can answer this question, Im impressed if not, dont worry, youre not alone. However, within the next few months, I predict Henrietta Lacks will be as much of a household name as Harry Potter. This woman is gaining much-deserved recognition due to a new nonfiction book thats rapidly climbing the bestseller charts.

My mom worked for Western Union when I was in college. She worked as the night manager, because it paid more, and she was paying my college tuition at the University of Montana. She worked alone in a large office on a side street. One night, a man with a gun came in and told her to give him all the cash she had.

Being a part of a student newspaper isnt easy. This I know. Its for this reason that, more often than not, I reserve judgment on editorial blunders made at other student publications, both at Lafayette College and elsewhere. These publications offer students a place to learn, and mistakes are part of the process.

I cringed when I saw the title of the recent article "Professors vote for more time off." "Time off" sounds like a vacation. To be fair, the author does not insinuate this in the text of the article, but it reminded me of a comment from a calculus student a couple years ago: I was working on research for a week at the Isaac Newton Institute (Cambridge, England), and the student began an e-mail question on a homework problem with "Sorry to bug you - I hope you are enjoying your vacation!" Such comments emphasize that the public, students, and, heck, even my own family, generally do not understand what I do.
